Betting Terms Glossary: From 1X2 to Self-Exclusion

Top Bet Tips · 2026

Every bettor eventually hits a wall of jargon: BTTS, Asian handicap, each-way, void, push. Bookmakers and tip pages rarely stop to define their terms, and misunderstandings cost real money. This glossary collects the terms you will actually meet, grouped by theme, in plain English.

Core Market Terms

  • 1X2 — the three-way match result market: home win (1), draw (X), away win (2).
  • BTTS (both teams to score) — a yes/no bet on whether each side scores at least once.
  • Over/Under — a bet on a statistic total (usually goals) finishing above or below a line, most commonly 2.5.
  • Double chance — one bet covering two of the three 1X2 outcomes (1X, X2, or 12).
  • Draw no bet (DNB) — stake refunded if the match ends level; otherwise a straight win bet.
  • Each-way — common in racing and outright markets: two bets in one, half on the win and half on a placed finish.

Handicap and Line Terms

Handicap betting gives one side a virtual head start. A team at −1.5 must win by two or more goals for the bet to succeed. Asian handicap refines this with quarter-lines (such as −0.25 or +0.75) that split your stake between two adjacent handicaps, removing the draw and allowing half-wins and half-losses.

Asian lineWin conditionRefund / half-loss case
0 (level ball)Your team winsDraw = stake refunded
−0.5Your team winsNone — draw or loss loses
−1.0Win by 2+ goalsWin by exactly 1 = refund
+0.25Win or draw (full win)Lose by 1 = half stake lost
+1.5Win, draw, or lose by 1Lose by 2+ loses fully

Settlement and Bet-Lifecycle Terms

  • Void — the bet is cancelled and the stake returned, typically after a postponed match or a palpable pricing error.
  • Push — the result lands exactly on the line (e.g. over 2 goals in a 2–0 match); stake refunded.
  • Dead heat — two or more selections tie for a position; winnings are divided by the number of tied selections.
  • Cash out — early settlement offered by the bookmaker at a live price, usually carrying extra margin.
  • Rule 4 — a racing deduction applied when a horse is withdrawn after betting opens.

Money and Strategy Terms

Bankroll is the total fund reserved for betting; a unit is your standard stake, usually 1–2% of that fund. Value describes a bet where your estimated probability exceeds the one implied by the odds. Arbitrage is backing all outcomes across different bookmakers at prices that guarantee a small profit — legal, but accounts doing it get limited quickly.

A tipster sells or publishes selections; an accumulator chains selections into one slip; a system bet (Yankee, Trixie, Heinz) covers every combination of a set of picks so one losing leg does not sink the whole slip.

Terms That Protect You

Some of the most important vocabulary is not about markets at all. Deposit limit caps how much you can add to an account per day, week, or month. Reality check is a mandatory on-screen reminder of session time and net result. Self-exclusion (GamStop in the UK, equivalent national registers elsewhere) blocks your access to all licensed operators for a chosen period. GAMSTOP, Gamban, and bank-level gambling blocks are tools, not admissions of failure — experienced bettors use limits as standard practice.

If the terms in this last section ever feel personally relevant, treat that as useful information about yourself and act on it early: set the limit, take the time-out, or call a confidential helpline such as the National Problem Gambling Helpline (1-800-GAMBLER in the US) or GamCare (UK).

This glossary is educational. Top Bet Tips is not a bookmaker and accepts no bets. 18+ / legal age only.
